Counselling

Counselling is a form of talking therapy that offers a space for individuals, couples or groups to help alleviate distress through bringing words to their experiences. This form of therapy has been shown to help many people in many different ways including supporting people with managing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, trauma, childhood adversities and difficulties, family and relationship struggles to name but a few.

There is evidence to show that in some situations, we may hold onto our distress internally on a felt sense, within our bodies, and the process of giving words to the distress helps to integrate and alleviate the intensity of those distressing feelings. Sometimes we may have been holding onto events and struggles experienced in childhood and without even realising, still trying to manage the impacts by ourselves in adulthood. In some circumstances, these can often show up in everyday life including with addictions, feelings of hopelessness, isolation, avoidance of certain situations, people or environments, variability in daily mood and emotional responses. Giving words to this or helping you find ways of expressing yourself in a way that works for you can be really successful in helping to improve mental health and quality of life.

There is also evidence that shows that it may not just be the integration of words, but that by having your words heard and validated by another person, a safe, supportive and compassionate other may also be significant in contributing to the alleviation of distress.

As humans, we have evolved to be social beings and shame is a socially developed feeling that has helped us on that evolutionary level in the past. However, now more than ever feelings of shame have become invasive, overwhelming and leave us feeling isolated, holding our sometimes incredibly overwhelming feelings all by ourselves. In therapy together, I will be here to help you know and feel that you are not on your own in your distress. I will not judge or criticise you but instead bring warmth and care to you, to your experience that has left you feeling such shame. Sometimes just knowing that we are not on our own can make the world of difference in how we feel and help to alleviate deeply held feelings of guilt and shame.

In our initial appointment together, we will capture an overview of what brings you to therapy at this time, what you are hoping for in the future which will help guide how and which approach we use to support you at this time. Whilst I bring therapeutic knowledge, skills and experience to the therapy, you are the expert of you and so with this combination, we will work together in achieving what you are looking for.

Within the therapy itself, you can expect to always be respected and valued. As an individual. Therapy will look different for everybody as we all have an individual combination of experiences and current needs and hopes. I provide a diverse and inclusive therapeutic space that does not discriminate or prejudice against any characteristic, group or belief.
